Sidetracks is a collective whose mandate is to make screenprinting accessible to projects and organizations working for social change, especially those that work around self-representation, self-expression, anti-racism and queer liberation.

Our mandate

Sidetracks is a collective that works towards empowerment, self-determination and collective liberation. The collective aims to be run by and for people who are trans, two-spirit, queer, Indigenous and/or people of colour* and friends. As a collective of activists and artists, we work within an anti-oppression framework toward social and economic transformation. We share skills and resources to create art in the spirit of self-representation and revolution.

Our Guiding Principles

This mission is founded on the understanding that our experiences of oppression (ableism, capitalism/poverty, homophobia, racism, sexism and transphobia) are interlinked. They work to undermine the strength, skills and knowledge within our communities. Having access to resources and skills helps us to combat these political, economic and social realities. As we learn from and teach each other, we acknowledge how we may be complicit in each others oppression in order to develop stronger, more accountable communities. We also equip ourselves to reclaim our images through self-representation from a dominant culture. We are a part of a community of powerful individuals that defend who and what we love. We want to help it grow stronger.

* We acknowledge that these terms can be problematic

*Sidetracks is a working group of QPIRG Concordia*

If you or your community project want to do a screenprinting project send us a request!

We’ll hook you up with volunteers and guide you through the process. We are here to make screenprinting accessible for people working for the revolution or for social change. Projects are done on a sliding scale / pay-what-you-can basis, though your donations are greatly appreciated (we are a volunteer-run space that relies entirely on donations and we’re always strapped for cash!)

Things you can screenprint for the revolution:

  • posters for your group
  • posters promoting an event
  • posters or t-shirts promoting a campaign
  • t-shirts for your volunteers
  • bandanas with anti-imperialist slogans on them
  • posters or t-shirts to sell as fundraisers
  • patches of identification
  • secret patches
  • all kinds of arts that make you feel good
  • silkscreening as a group activity – fun for all ages (except really little ones)

If this interests you – fill out an project proposal form and send it to: sidetracks.team@gmailo.com – a member of  Sidetracks volunteer will contact you soon thereafter
